When was the work done?
I think around August.
What was involved?
We actually got our kitchen renovated and for that we had to close a door and open up a window to create French doors, so there were some small changes to the external wall on the rear of the house and also into the whole kitchen structure. BS Building did the foundation work also. I got somebody else to put in the kitchen, but Barry's electrician was in to do all the electrical work; his tiler to all the tiling. The kitchen people installed the cabinets.
Actually, when we were getting the French doors in, our window guy couldn't come on the day and we couldn't have left the door open either, but Barry was able to put it in. So things like that, he was very accommodating and willing to work with other people, you know the window specialist and gas specialist, and the kitchen people, although they were not his people.
How did you choose BS Building Services?
I picked them online. I actually saw Barry's work. I'd seen his reviews and people who'd called him again. I would definitely call him again if I need some work done. In fact, I had suggested him to a friend who had a leak in their house.
I did call different people, but I somehow connected with Barry. We got on well together. He seemed like a very genuine person and understood exactly what I wanted; he was flexible and also mentioned his available dates.
Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to Barry Smith?
Yes, I did. Initially we were planning to extend the kitchen, but then we decided that this house didn't require a huge extension. We just wanted to renovate the kitchen that would open it up and give me enough space anyway. I did have everything in my mind as to what I required but during the whole process Barry was exceptionally helpful.
Did Barry introduce new ideas?
He was really good that way, for example, one day he was in the kitchen having his lunch and he suggested changing the sockets. At the time I had white sockets and never really thought that far ahead. He said it was my decision but that it'd make the kitchen look much better. Because you're so caught up in the whole renovation those little things sometimes escape your mind. So I'm very happy with it.
Barry suggested what kind of insulation I should go for too. He did give me all the options. Barry suggested a change to the external wall because that would be another advantage when the house is being rated from an energy efficiency point of view. He mentioned all those kinds of things.
How did the project run?
Absolutely fantastic. BS Building would leave the house clean. The other important thing was that I did stay out for two or three days to have surgery, but when I got back home Barry was aware that I couldn't walk around too easily and they had their equipment tucked up tightly against the walls. All Barry's men were really good as well.
What was the biggest benefit to you of using BS Building Services?
For me it was very easy to communicate with Barry. If I were to call him and he wasn't able to take the call he would definitely leave me a message later on in the day. We're both very busy professionals and he would make sure that he had everything planned for the following day. If he needed us to stay back for a few minutes to open up the door or whatever, he would let us know the previous night. He was very well-organised that way.
What's your favourite part now?
I absolutely love it all.
Would you recommend BS Building Services to others?
I would call him again and I would recommend him to anybody. To be honest I was extremely happy with Barry and thank god I chose him. Barry's very accommodating, very easy to communicate with, very helpful. He understands his job.
Any tips for other people?
Definitely plan ahead. Have the work organised beforehand in the sense you should be picking up stuff or what kind of colour schemes you have in mind so that you are not delaying the builder with your lack of planning or your decisions. And be a little bit flexible, things cannot always go according to the plan.
