The Customer Story

When was the work done?
The work was carried out in April, 2010.

What was involved?
When I moved into my house the back garden was just a plain lawn with grass. Anne drew up a garden design and handled all of the planting herself while her team took care of the main landscaping. The whole garden has been totally transformed and changed. Parts of the garden have been raised up and two kidney shaped lawns with beds either side were added. There's box hedging, stone and lots of other things.

How did you choose Anne Hamilton Fox Gardens?
My sister met Anne through a group. That was the first contact. I chose Anne to do the work because of the type of garden work she does. I like modern gardens and had seen some of Anne's work so I felt she would be able to achieve the type of garden I wanted. I didn't speak to any other landscapers. Anne came and met with me to discuss what I wanted, went away and then brought back some designs based on our discussion. It's all about trust and you need to find a designer who sees things as you do.

Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to Anne Hamilton?
I wanted a modern looking garden and was open to suggestions. Anne took my ideas of what I wanted and turned it into reality. she was brilliant.

Did Anne introduce new ideas?
Input and suggestions from Anne was very important. I have twelve foot high concrete wall in the back garden I had no idea what to do with. Anne came up with a brilliant idea of putting narrow, cedar wood slats across the wall to dress it up. It doesn't sound like much but it was the best idea ever for my garden, what an improvement!

How did the project run?
Excellent. Initially I thought the work would be done in a few days but a huge amount of work went into it and it took a little over two weeks. Anne and the guys she worked with were fantastic. So much care and attention went into the garden that it was worth every minute that it took to have it completed.

What was the biggest benefit to you of using Anne Hamilton Fox Gardens?
Herself. Anne is such a lovely, friendly person. During the time the project was being carried out, I was away most of the time. Anne stayed in constant contact with me which was very important. When you're away, you wonder what's going on and you want to see what's happening. Anne would send me photos by email or on my phone showing the progress being made. It really put my mind at rest because I was only home on the weekends. That to me really summed up Anne's service and it was excellent.

What's your favourite part now?
Overall, everything. The work Anne did with the twelve foot wall has made the biggest inpact but everything turned out lovely. Now that Spring is coming around, I'm starting to see the garden come to life again.

Would you recommend Anne Hamilton Fox Gardens to others?
I would yes, definitely.

Any tips for other people?
Have patience! You know how you always want to have something done really quickly? I've learned that having patience and getting the job done right, instead of rushed is the most important thing.

Beachfront Deck At Inchydowney, West Cork

Fox Gardens, Cork Inchydoney, West Cork
This garden was for a client that had a lovely beachfront property but because of the slope had no space for entertaining. The client wanted to include an element of sculpture so we designed a curved deck surrounded by a copper planter. The planter meant that they would have no need for a rail or balustrade, and the choice of Feather Grass for the planting was intended to flow with the wind and emulate the dunes thereby nestling into the landscape. Exposed to the elements the copper will eventually “verdi gris” and turn that beautiful bluey green colour. Garden For Period House in West Cork

Fox Gardens, Cork Glandore, Co. Cork
This garden was for a period house with an exceptional view. The client wanted to make use of a large expanse of steeply sloped lawn. The property suggested classic lines, wide steps and local materials. The terracing curves around the slopes and allows for several formal herbaceous borders. Bloom Winning Garden 2010

Fox Gardens, Cork
Fox Garden Design took top prize in the engaging space category for our "Islands" garden at Bloom 2010. The design concept contrasts what we see in nature - with 3 rolling islands of land surrounded by the stillness of water. The first island is planted with a soft flowing carpet of small blue daisies. A central island is planted with grass for sitting, and the third island is planted with a graceful sedge. The garden is clad with Liscannor dry stone walling. Bloom Medal Winner 2011

Fox Gardens, Cork
The Bloom garden is simply called The Orb - A space for celebration. As the name suggested, this garden was created for celebrating with friends and family in circles of interleaving social spaces, features and planting. At the heart of this garden is the Orb. Inspired by Chinese lanterns, it's the bright space at the center of any party. The Orb offers secluded seating, enticing patterns of light and glimpses of the surrounding lush planting. To the left stands a lustrous copper beech. To the right, a Kilkenny limestone circle with a hand crafted stone barbecue. A curve of hedging floats through water and stepping-stones lead into the main garden. In the background, the pale leaves of a Tulip tree catch the light. We got together with Glenisk at Bloom 2011. Reflective Pond, Schull, Co. Cork

Fox Gardens, Cork Schull, Co. Cork
The setting for this project was a beautiful property with a view of the sea and our clients wanted to make use of an area of their garden that overlooked the view. The shape of the garden suggested a mound wrapped around a dip, so we build a pond in the dip and created a stone bank in the shape of a fish to wrap around the pond. This photo shows the reflective nature of the still water in the pond.
