When was the work done?
January 2004 What was involved?
My brief was something beautiful to look at and to entertain in. I wanted a structured French - Italian style garden and water was an essential feature.
Dermot's design really captured that brief. He built a structured garden with a lovely patio in indian sandstone, a decking path with very pretty lights, a very nice water feature, nice beds, pots with box shrubs. He put in soft lighting. He also cleaned down and restored old walls.
How did you choose Strong Garden Design?
We met Dermot through a mutual friend. What I liked about him was that he clicked straight what I wanted. He came back a couple of weeks later with very impressive design. It was exactly what I was looking for and we made very few changes to the original design.
Had you definite ideas in mind before you talked to Dermot Strong?
Yes. I wanted a structured garden, with a French or Italian feeling.
Did Dermot introduce new ideas?
Yes he did. His design really captured my French/Italian garden idea. It also marries the garden very well with the house. The indian sandstone was his idea, the decking with the lights, the planting on either side.
Did the project run smoothly day to day? Was there any disruption?
Very smoothly, considering that it was January and a bad time of year. Dermot was very methodical and very clean. He didn't leave stuff lying around.
What was the biggest benefit to you of using Strong Garden Design?
First of all, the way it happened. We were very lucky we didn't have to go searching. Also, I really enjoyed working with him. He's a great listener and very easy to work with. Another big plus was that he always rang when he wasn't able to come.
What's your favourite part now?
I just love everything. I love to open the door in the evening, go out, turn on the lights, look at the bay tree. Just the whole structure.
Would you recommend Strong Garden Design to others?
Absolutely.
Any tips for other people?
Have a budget in mind. And be realistic about what can be done within budget. If you want quality design and materials, be prepared to pay for it.
Take time to impart what you want to the designer. Communication is very, very important. It's too late afterward.
Finances are very important. If you're going to deviate from the plan, find out if there's an extra cost.
